OUR HISTORY
The Karnataka Golf Association was established in 1973 by a group of avid Golfers who made constant efforts towards establishing a Golf Course that would be the pride of Bangalore.
The search for a suitable site for an international standard golf course started in right earnest and in May 1980, the then Chief Minister of Karnataka, Shri. R Gundu Rao personally took the initiative to hand over 125 acres of land in Challaghatta to the Karnataka Golf Association.
The Karnataka Golf Association (KGA) was registered under Mysore Societies Registration Act 1960 (Mysore Act No.17 of 1960) on 3rd September 1973 with the primary object of designing and construction a Championship Golf Course at Bangalore.

To achieve the health and physical fitness of the people through promotion of sports particularly the game of golf. Accordingly promote the game of golf in all aspects. To inculcate the true spirit of sports and to promote a spirit of fraternity and camaraderie among the members.

2009 Re-design and drainage work for 18 holes completed; KGA now a World class course

18 hole international standard golf course of 7227 yards. Fairways are covered with Bermuda Tifway 419 grass while greens have Tifdward Bermuda grass, well manicured and irrigated by automated sprinkler system to keep them lush green throughout the year. Though a level area generally, it is well contoured and challenging with 10 water bodies and 73 bunkers. Nine holes are flood lit for facility of night golf. Driving range is also flood lit and is considered longest in india (350 yards)
The KGA Golf Course is close to nature with beautifully crafted landscape, has water bodies with meandering water ways connecting the water bodies. Along the waterways and also all long with the fairway of the golf course, a canopy of selected flowering tress species like Gul Mohur, Royal Palm, Oil Palm, Silver Oak, Bottle Brush, Hole Mathi, Golden Bamboo, Tabubeas, Sisso, Bauhinia, Pride of India, Akash Mallige, Ashoka, Cassias, Neem, Flame of the Forest, Rain Tree, Mahogany and Shrubs have been planted and this gives a very natural look to the Landscape.
The KGA has about 4500 members comprising of entrepreneurs like Mr. Azim Premji, Mr. Nandan Nilekani, Mrs. Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Dr. Vijay Mallya, CEOs and MDs of Corporates, Senior Functionaries of Corporates, a few MPs, MLAs and MLCs (both present and past), Government Officers from IAS, IPS, IFS & KAS services, a few members from higher judiciary, Members of Defence Services (Serving and Retired), International Cricketers, like Mr. G. R. Viswanath, Mr. E. A. S. Prasanna, Mr. Syed Kirmani, Mr. Roger Binny, Mr. Anil Kumble, Mr. Rahul Dravid, Mr. Javagal Srinath, Mr. Venkatesh Prasad to name a few. The membership of the KGA represents a microcosm of the metropolitan city of Bangalore a mini India.
The Indian Golf Union has recognized the Karnataka Golf Association to be among the top four Golf Courses in the Country. Our Floodlit Driving Range is the longest in the Country and the Workshop boasts of the latest in golf course machinery from reputed companies all over the world.
KGA’s efforts to convert Challaghata into an international standard Golf Course was recognized by the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation. This certificate accords recognition to KGA for promotion of Golf Tourism in Karnataka.
The symbol of the State the Ganduberunda (the Double Eagle) is the emblem of the Karnataka Golf Association
KGA is encouraging Junior Golf Programme which has more than 200 students on its roll. Number of Junior Golfers from this Programme has excelled themselves in the Southern Junior Golf circuit. Many Junior Golfers are also emerging now in the National Junior Circuit.
KGA is encouraging and providing financial support to number of Caddies who has taken up the game of Golf and have turned Pro. One of the Caddie bringing laurels to KGA is Mr. C. Muniyappa who won the Indian Open 2009. Amongst the top 50 Pro Golfers Mr. Dharma and Mr. Murthy, Caddie turned Pro figures prominently. KGA is also supporting number of Caddies who have turned Amateur golfers.
The Golf a sport has caught the imagination of the youngsters in India. A few Championship like Mr. Anirbhan Lahiri, Mr. Abhishek Jha, Mr.Jyoti Randhawa, Mr. Rohana Anusara (Sri Lanka), Mr. Siddiqi Rahman (Bangladesh), Mr.C. Muniyappa, Mr. Chikka Rangappa have participated in the recently held International Golf Tournament at KGA. For the young, this has been an inspiration, a number of golf training courses have been conducted in the last few years. These youngsters are being trained by the very best of coaches available.
KGA could boast of producing a number of Golf Champions like Mr. C. Muniyappa (Winner of Indian Open), Mr. Khalin Joshi (Winner of Indian Open Amateur, Bangladesh Open and Bronze Medalist for India in Fiji), Ms. Sharmila Nicollete (India No.1 Lady Professional), Mr. Trishul Chinnappa (India No.1 Junior and Gold Medalist in China representing India), Mr. Rahul Ganapathy (Winner of KGA, PGTI Pro Tournament). There are a number of young golfers at least three dozen golfers trained in KGA who are participating in National and International Tournaments and bringing Laurels to the City of Bangalore. This would add to BRAND Bangalore and Karnataka.
The KGA in association with Department of Tourism assist the golf Clubs located in Karnataka to promote Golf by providing Caddies Training, Professional Coaches, Free Range Balls and Golf Sets, and help in supporting junior golf.
The KGA Golf Course has also been hosting a number of dignitaries from the various fields like governance, sports persons etc. The noted visistors are the visit of Late Shri Fakrudin Ali Ahmed, President of India, Shri. Farook Abdulla, Golf enthusiast and ex Hon. Union Minister. Amongst sportsmen who have visited the KGA are Mr. Ricky Ponting, Mr. Jonty Rhodes, Mr. Kapil Dev, Mr. Martin Bicknell, Mr. Chris Broad, Mr. Gladstone Small, Mr. Clive Rice and others.
The KGA has the privilege of hosting many Championship Tournaments starting with the inaugural tournament during SAARC summit. Some of the Championship tournaments conducted by KGA are :
- Annual National Ranking Tournaments for Professionals, Amateurs and Juniors from the year 1996.
- In addition annually about 40 to 45 Tournaments sponsored by Corporates, including Charity tournaments are being held at KGA.
- For the first time in India, Sir Michael Bonallack Tournament was held in March 2014.
- For the first time in South India, Indian Open was held in November 2012.
The Tourism Department and the KSTDC together have organized a few tournaments like Golden Chariot Golf Tournament and Toyota Karnataka Golf Festival at the KGA Golf Course.
Golf is a growing sport all over the world. It is used by some countries to attract tourists and one of the best examples is China. In fact the salubrious climate of Bangalore, a God given gift, calls for initiatives to develop Bangalore as a Sports and Leisure center. The potential of Bangalore has not been fully exploited, as there are only few golf courses in Bangalore. The KGA has understanding with most of the Start Hotels in Bangalore to enable the tourists availing the golfing facility of KGA and thus contributing to tourism. The KGA has reciprocal arrangements with four golf clubs in Karnataka, Twenty One Golf Clubs all over India and Eight Golf Clubs overseas.
